This department was organized in 1968 under the name "Economic cybernetics". 1982-1988 the department was renamed as "Computer engineering and economic mathematical methods", from 1989 to 1996 it was renamed as "Computer engineering in agriculture and economic mathematical methods", from 1997-2000 - "Computer science and economic mathematical methods in agriculture", from 2001-2005 - "Computer science and economic mathematical modeling", 2005-2009 - "Information systems and economic mathematical modeling methods", and from 2009 to 2015- "Information technologies and systems".Since 2015, the department continues its activities under the name "Information technology" and functions as a specialized department in the specialties "Information technology" and "Process automation engineering” at the Bachelor's level, “Information systems in management” and "Applied software" at the Master's one. The department teaches such disciplines as Computer science, Economic informatics, Information and communication technologies, Information technologies and Communications, Economic and mathematical methods, Econometrics, computer graphics. The department has 5 computer rooms.
Currently, the department is headed by associate professor Zakir Huseynov.
The department employs 30 faculty members, including 10 PhD and associate professors, 8 senior teachers, 12 assistants.
