It was established in 1929. The department taught Turkish (Azerbaijani) and Russian languages in the first years of its activity. The department was headed by a prominent Azerbaijani poet, Professor Ahmad Javad Akhundzade until 1934. The first teachers of the department were I.A. Agayev, S.M. Samadov, A.C. Orujaliyev, I.P. Lukyanov, and E.A. Pachevich. In 1932 I.Z.Gayibov, Y.M. Sharifov, and I.Ustinov were invited to the department.
In the 1930s, foreign languages (German and English) were taught in separate courses. The head of these courses was Friedrich Schiman, members were P. Bogdanov, Rash-Gilson, B. Barukhovsky, KP Klenebskaya and Alnikov. C.M. Akhundzade, I.A Agayev, A.M. Gamarli, Y.M.Sharifov, I.Z. Gayibov, M.I Hajiyev, K.V.Klenevskaya, A.A. Asgarov, B.G.Klyundt taught at the department of foreign languages as well as the department of general languages in 1934-1936. In 1938, LP Polyakov was elected the head of the department of Russian and Azerbaijani languages.
In 1939-1949 the department of languages was headed by Ismayil Gayibov. During these years, highly qualified teachers such as P.G.Alexandrov, E.N.Drachinskaya, A.N.Klimova, T.M.Bidmont, and A.M.Gismatulina were invited to the department. In 1956, Yusif Sharifov was appointed the interim head of the language department, and then Sona Hashimova was elected to that position. At that time, the department was staffed by T.M Vidmont, I.R Nikitina, S.A. Safikurdskaya, S.K Fattahova, S.R Usubov, P. Korotkova, S.A Ivanova, O.A Osmanov.
In 1963, the Department of Languages was divided into separate departments of Russian and foreign languages, during the time when foreign languages were taught mainly by national staff. In 1963-1971, the department of foreign languages was headed by Sabir Usubov. In 1963-1981 the department of the Russian language was headed by S.A. Hashimova, in 1972-1982 the department of foreign languages was headed by Aslan Nagiyev, in 1982-1985 by Osman Osmanov, in 1982-1997 the department of the Russian language was headed by associate professor Iskander Isgandarov.
In 1987, the departments of Russian and foreign languages were merged and renamed the “Department of Languages”, and in 1990, the Department of Languages was again divided into “Azerbaijani-foreign languages” and Russian. Associate Professor Eynaddin Mammadov was elected the head of the department “Azerbaijani language and foreign languages”, associate professor Iskander Isgandarov was elected the head of the department of the Russian language.
Since 2005, the Department of Languages has been headed by Associate Professor Aida Hasanova. At present, the department teaches Azerbaijani, Russian, English, German, and French languages. The department has 60 employees. 4 of them are candidates of philological sciences, associate professors, 23 are senior teachers, the others are teachers.
